All to often the main characters seen to be above human, ex-Special Forces, CIA, FBI, etc... It was refreshing to engage a character who is an everyday Joe (Oaks). Right away Joe meets a woman and his life will never be the same again. Without giving anything away, the twist and turns that ensue were so entertaining. I couldn't put the book down. Let's just say the 2nd Joe Oaks novel, is on my must have list.
**SPOILER ALERT**
Not the type of book I usually read at all, therefore hard to evaluate. This book was categorized as a romance, but it is definitely NOT a romance. First of all, there is no happy ending. Second, two people shacking up does not a romance make. The main character, Joe Oaks, thinks he loves Katya, but how can he be sure when he just keeps trying to dig himself out of the messes he makes of life? He never examines his feelings or never really has ANY deep thoughts anywhere in the book. As a romance, this book fails miserably, and I should give it zero stars.
On the up side, it is a very fast read. The plot is fast-past and even gets you a little hooked after the first few slow chapters. Well, maybe it's just that you want to see how much more Joe can screw up his life that keeps you interested. The first bit of the book is also confusing if you don't know anything about the music industry or street lingo. Once Joe is distanced from the music part and no music jargon is used, it is a much easier story to follow.
While this book wasn't my style at all, I could see some people liking it. If you like humorous mystery or suspense and a definite manly writing style, then you would probably like this book.
What a fun book to read! Joe Oaks gets into one scrape after another. It fun to see how he recovers.
